We want our students to hone their skills in the area of fine arts. Constant, consistent progress in the areas of speech, music, and art will enable the students to use their talents to serve their local churches for the glory of God.
Under the leadership of Mr. Jim Potter, our speech program has a well-deserved reputation for excellence. Each spring, students and faculty from FBS put on a full scale play under Mr. Potter's direction. Students also have a variety of opportunities to perform in different speech categories at various competitions. Students also have a variety of opportunities for class presentations, projects, and speeches in our English and Social Studies programs.
Elementary band is offered to our fifth and sixth grade students with an emphasis on music reading. The students develop as musicians and are encouraged to perform to the best of their ability. Competition for chair positions and opportunities to perform at concerts and the annual fine arts competition aids the learning process. Private and small-group lessons are offered.
The FBS bands are divided into junior high band (grades 6-8) and senior high band (9-12). Concerts in the fall and the spring and the MACS state competition are offered to train for future ministry service. In addition, the senior high band participates in a local band festival with students from Christian schools around the area. Faith Baptist has had numerous state, festival, and national fine arts competition winners in both band and various ensembles, including at our recent 2017 competition! Private lessons are offered in a variety of instruments.
All students are taught the fundamentals of singing, posture, breathing, musicianship, and sight singing. Concerts in the fall and the spring along with state competition are offered to aid the learning process. The senior high choir often takes part in the annual Bob Jones University Fine Arts Festival. The school has had numerous state festival and national fine arts competition winners in both choir and various ensembles, including at the most recent state competition! Private voice lessons are also offered.
Weekly classes in basic music skills are required for all elementary students. The basic building blocks of music are taught, including notes, rests, clefs, and music reading skills. An emphasis is given to proper singing technique. Our elementary classes participate in at least one concert per year, and they have become a big part of our annal Christmas concert!
These classes, available to student in both elementary and secondary levels, teach basic handbell techniques such as proper ringing, malleting, and plunking. Teamwork and diligence are emphasized as the most important qualities a handbell choir can possess. The handbell choirs have participated and have been successful in the state competition with a mixed repertoire of sacred and secular music.
